We are back from D.C.-- We arrived home late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, and the trip was a great time. It had it's stressful moments, but overall, I left with a huge respect for the people at Curesearch, and a feeling of solidarity with the other family members we met at the rally.
I really had no idea what I was getting myself into, and let me tell ya, the actual meeting times on Capitol Hill were way more in depth than I expected. We had appointments set from 11:00 AM till 4:30 PM on Tuesday, and I'm not exactly sure how they affected the legislative assistants we spoke with...I got the feeling some of these people thought we were parading our bald kids in their face, and I felt a bit overprotective of Hannah.
I was uncomfortable with how often she heard the amount of deaths a year from childhood cancer. She asked me what her chance of dying from cancer was, and I said, ZERO. That's my only answer for her right now. Eden spoke directly to Senator Voinavich's aide and said, "We really need this money. I don't want to die." This is the reality I know sounds shocking to anyone not in this situation, but it's our daily reality.
The people at Curesearch are wonderful. I know I probably wouldn't be involved with helping advocate for pediatric cancer funding if I had not had it thrust upon my life with a direct diagnosis of my daughter, but these people work everyday for the cause, and I feel such respect and admiration for all of them.
On the other hand, after seeing how the process in D.C. works, I left feeling disheartened and wondering how any positive changes can ever happen. Seeing the amount of money spent on a "war", while cuts are made to all of our own country's support systems, left me disgusted and frustrated.
There was a pool on the roof of the hotel and it had very nice couches to sit and lounge. We spent every leisure moment we had available hanging out up there. The room was really nice and Curesearch fed us the whole time, too.
We had a TON of pictures taken by the professional photographer hired by Curesearch, including a picture of Hannah and Eden with Congresswoman Deborah Pryce. As soon as we have the access to them, I'll be posting them to share with you all.
Thank you SO much to my dear friends who helped fund this trip for us. I really believe Nationwide Children's Hospital should be funding these trips every year, as Curesearch and their funds help the hospital's bottom line. I will work for this to happen next year, because this trip is no vacation. It is a LOT of work.
